Extra gypsy and traveller sites suggested

South Gloucestershire Council has published details of seven extra sites that were suggested during the last Gypsy and Traveller consultation.

The extra sites that have been suggested are a mixture of completely new sites and extra pitches on existing sites:

New sites:
1. Little Acre, Dyers Lane, Iron Acton (4 - 6 residential pitches)
2. Land at Tanhouse Lane, Yate (10 residential pitches and 2 transit pitches)

Existing sites:
3. Moor Paddock, Westerleigh Road, Westerleigh (additional 3 residential pitches and 1 transit pitch)
4. 56 Ram Hill, Coalpit Heath (additional 1 residential pitch )
5. Giddy End, High Lane, Winterbourne (additional 1 residential pitch)
6. The Meadows, Parkfield, Pucklechurch (additional 1 residential pitch)
7. 85a Parkfield Road, Pucklechurch (additional 1 - 2 residential pitches)

You only have until Monday 13 July to provide any relevant information you may have on these extra sites. Officers are stressing that this isn't a full consultation, that will come later, and the sites haven't been assessed in as much detail as the original seventeen. You can find more information on the South Glos website:

www.southglos.gov.uk/gypsydpd

There will be a drop-in session in the Courtside Suite at Yate Leisure Centre on Monday 29 June 2009 from 4pm until 8pm.

You can email any information to:

or write to:

We had expected the report on all your replies to the previous consultation to be published in May. Instead a report covering comments on all 24 sites will be published in the autumn, along with the draft list of sites for submission to the Government. Your Focus Team is unhappy about the delay, which means extra months of uncertainty for residents, but officers say the Council cannot comment on the suitability of the previous sites before they have publicised the extra ones. When the draft list is published in the autumn there will be another full public consultation.

More comments on Gypsy and Traveller sites

Following the Westerleigh drop-in and a meeting last week with residents concerned about the transit site between the business parks, Claire Young is finalising an additional response to the Gypsy and Traveller consultation. Unfortunately the Council's email system had problems at the weekend so if anyone has sent an email to Claire and hasn't had a response, please get in touch again as soon as possible.

Gypsy and Traveller sites

Claire Young attended the Gypsy and Traveller sites drop-in run by Westerleigh Village Residents Association on Saturday. There was a good turnout despite the weather and there were some very interesting discussions.

Some people were unhappy that they hadn't received acknowledgement of their responses to the consultation, so they couldn't be sure they had been received and accepted. Claire has raised this with one of the officers leading the consultation and she says she will be sending out acknowledgements once all the responses have been recorded in their system.

One Lib Dem Councillor was told in an email that some sites in South Glos were being withdrawn from the list and others added, but when she asked which sites at Cabinet neither officers nor Cabinet members could tell her. We wait to see what this means for Westerleigh.

Gypsy and Traveller meeting

Westerleigh Village Residents Association have kindly invited Claire Young along to their open day regarding the Gypsy and Traveller consultation on Saturday (10am to 2pm in the Village Hall). The consultation formally finished last week but the Residents Association have secured extra time for their response and will be holding an exhibition using materials supplied by South Glos Council.

Have you had your say on the Gypsy and Traveller consultation?

The formal deadline for the end of the Gypsy and Traveller consultation is this Thursday. However, if you want to comment but cannot do so in time, it's worth talking to the officers at South Glos. After Westerleigh Village Residents Association successfully secured an extension for their response, the consultation website says:

The consultation formally closes on Thursday 29th January 2009 but if for any reason you are unable to submit your comments to us by 29 January 2009, please contact us to discuss your representation.

It's vital that everyone's concerns are heard and it doesn't matter whether that's online, by email or in a letter.
