Westerleigh lights raising money for charity again

Father Christmas last year
Once again people in Westerleigh are raising money for charity with their Christmas lights - and not just in Mill Crescent. This year they are supporting Southmead Intensive Care Unit and Cystic Fibrosis. Don't forget to drop something in the donation bucket at the end of Mill Crescent.

Mill Crescent Christmas lights raising money for BUST

Lights in Mill Crescent last year
This year the Mill Crescent Christmas lights will be raising money for B.U.S.T (Breast Cancer Unit Support Trust), established in 1991 at Frenchay by patients and now based at Southmead Hospital. The funds raised by BUST and its supporters enable the clinicians to buy advanced equipment before it is available through NHS funding, with the aim of prevention, early detection and better treatment.

Wickwar light switch-off?

Following the success in Charfield of switching off their streetlights for most of the night, your Parish Council are now in discussion with South Gloucestershire Council to see whether it is will be possible to do the same in Wickwar. A draft scheme has been prepared by SGC for discussion with the P.C. in January and then it will go out to public consultation shortly afterwards.

Each light can be dealt with separately, and for safety reasons, they are likely to be left on at busy road junctions and around the elderly person’s residences in the middle of the village. The switch off times would be approximately 12.30 a.m. to 5.00 a.m. Each light would need a modification, and they are therefore looking at the Autumn of 2011 for a start, if approved.
