Yate International Academy building project to go ahead

Education Secretary Michael Gove has announced that Yate International Academy is among the building projects that will go ahead after all, despite a delay while government cuts were being decided.

Steve Webb MP said "I am delighted that the building project at Yate International Academy has been given the go-ahead today"

Meanwhile the Winterbourne International Academy building scheme will have to wait a while for a decision - the government list describes the situation as "capital allocation for notification after spending review", presumably the the Comprehensive Spending Review in October.

Ridings-King Edmund Academy proposals

The Lib Dems have called for land at the two schools to be safeguarded if the Academy proposals go ahead. Cllr Ian Blair said: "Should the schools decide to go ahead with the merger, then it is important that none of the land value is lost to the rest of the community."

"If the Council itself had closed one of the schools then it would keep the land and keep the money received from any sale of that land. But if the land is transferred to the Academy then they could choose to sell off the land to the highest bidder and use the money purely for their own purposes and that might not be in the best interests of the Yate and Winterbourne communities."

South Glos Council's Cabinet decided to publish closure notices for The Ridings and King Edmund Community School to allow them to re-open as Academies in September. There were 203 responses to the Council's consultation, with 55.7% against. More responses were received from Winterbourne parents and pupils, where a majority opposed the proposal, then from King Edmund Community School, where a majority supported the plans. The Ridings' own consultation ends on February 9th.

Academy School consultation

Last night South Gloucestershire Council held a consultation meeting for parents at The Ridings School on plans to close The Ridings and King Edmund Schools in order for them to reopen as Academies. A similar meeting will be held tonight at King Edmund School.

Officers explained that the Council consultation was only about the closure, there will be a separate consultation run by the lead sponsor of the Academy proposals, The Ridings School, on those proposals. Meetings for that will be held on 10th and 11th November, while the deadline for comments in the Council's consultation is 14th November. Parents were concerned that they were being asked to comment on the closure without knowing the full details of the Academy proposals.

You can read the Council's consultation documents on the South Glos website. For the latest information on the Academy proposals, go to The Ridings' website.
